Discover New Features in the Updated Web-Based Microsoft Excel Suite!

The web version of Microsoft Excel has always lagged behind the desktop versions in features, but these days, it’s good enough for most spreadsheet work. Microsoft has been slowly filling in the remaining gaps, and today the company announced several improvements to formulas in web Excel.

First, Excel on the web has a new Insert Function dialog, which can be found from the “Insert Function” button on the Formulas tab or by clicking the fx button on the formula bar. It’s a lot like the Formula Builder in the desktop versions of Excel, but it appears as a popup instead of a sidebar.

The announcement blog post explains, “The Insert Function dialog simplifies the process of building complex formulas, as it provides a user-friendly interface to help you select the right function and its arguments. Quickly look up a function or browse through categories to find what you need. Each function comes with a description and expected arguments, and you get a preview of each argument’s value and the complete formula.”

Microsoft has also rolled out several improvements to formula readability. There’s now Parenthesis Coupling, which highlights the start and end of the current set of parenthesis when you’re typing in a formula — a common feature in code editors. The blog post says this change “simplifies the identification of paired parentheses allowing you to concentrate on the specific section of the formula you are currently editing.”

Excel on the web now uses a monospaced font in the formula bar, which Microsoft started testing on Excel for Windows back in August . The new font makes formulas generally easier to read and edit, but the regular document font and style options aren’t overwritten. When you’re done editing a cell, the text goes back to whatever styles were previously applied.

Finally, Excel on the Web and Windows are both receiving a “Value Preview” feature, which shows you the result of any part of the formula when you hover over it. This is similar to step-by-step debugging in programming, and it can give you a better idea of what’s happening in multi-part formulas without deleting parts and adding them back.
